About our Museum
The Canal Museum is the place to explore the history of the lift, Locks and Lives associated with Foxton Locks in engaging and innovative ways.
Thanks to the generosity of our partners and a big grant from the Arts Council the museum was transformed in 2015 into something unique and exciting.
There is something for everyone in the building, not just the waterway enthusiast and historian. Follow the canal round the museum and Fred will help you discover Foxton’s past and introduce the people that made it such a wonderful place.
We have the Boiler Game, which requires you to put coal on the fire to make the lift work, we have the play boat where children can explore life on the canal, we have
a great collection of waterway artifacts and stories, our working lift model, and our large screen story where you can watch while Fred tells
you about our waterways history.
Visitors to Canal Museum , used words like ‘Excellent’, Fantastic, and Brilliant to describe the new interior.

Sorry we are closed at the moment
Reopening in 2021. We are currently closed because of the virus. Many of our volunteers are relatively old and the Trust believes that their health, and that of our visitors must come first. The Museum does not have the space for social distancing and its interactive displays cannot easily be operated and sanitised. However next year we will have some exciting new displays for you all to enjoy.
Children Free with a paying adult
4 legged members of your family are welcome, but we ask that they are under close control and on a short lead.
The Canal Museum is fully Accessible, however parts of the site are steep and assistance may be required. please call us for advice and alternative parking.
