School Visits

The Foxton Canal Museum is very pleased to welcome school visits, they are now very popular. Every year we get more schools wanting to visit. This is because we work in partnership with Canal & River Trust Education Volunteers, based at Foxton Locks.

Canal & River Trust is the environmental charity entrusted with a national treasure – 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales. Canal & River Explorers deliver FREE themed workshops, linked to the National Curriculum, in schools and out on the towpath. Their education visits are free of charge, however donations to Canal & River Trust are always welcomed.

If you wish to find out more or book a visit with the Canal & River Explorers, please follow the link to their education website You are navigating away from the Foxton canal Museum page.

In the Canal Museum children have the opportunity to find out about the history of the site, including the locks and the boat lift. Using a variety of interactive presentations and high quality animation, suitable for all age groups, the past is brought to life. There is a charge of £1 per child. Maximum number is 30 children, supporting adults free. A class needs to be split into smaller groups for the Canal Museum and this is where the Explorers can really help.  Whilst one group visits the Canal Museum another can learn about waterside safety, local history, engineering heroes, and habitats, as well as having a look at the boat lift remains. There is also opportunity for the children to bring their pocket money. We have a pocket money section in our shop.

In June Foxton Locks hosts  Heritage Schools Week. During this Schools Week, primary schools can get involved in all of our usual activities plus the opportunity to go on board a real heritage boat. The children step aboard the boat to explore the cabin where boating families lived and the ‘Hold’ where cargo was loaded. We advise booking early for this Schools Week as places are limited. Please book with Canal and River Trust.
