Foxton Canal museum is fun, children of all ages love it.

Models, interactive displays, and a wide range of waterway artefacts tell the story of the lift, the Locks, the waterways and the people who lived on the canals.

Foxton Canal Museum was opened in 1989 and is situated in the Boiler House of the lift which was reconstructed by Trust Volunteers. 

The Museum tells the story of the lift and canals it served conserving the history for the benefit of all.  

The museum is staffed by a full time keeper and volunteers. we collect objects, photographs, and documents which help tell the story of the lift.  

 Museum staff and volunteers research the history of the lift and local canals. We hold extensive waterway archives, as well as objects from the site.  We are proud to say that the museum has won a number of awards, amongst them 3 Leicestershire Heritage Awards and a highly commended in the prestigious, nationally based, Gulbenkian Awards.   

In our SOUVENIR EMPORIUM inside the museum we have a selection of exclusive souvenirs of Foxton, The Lift and local canals We can offer conducted tours of the site and museum for pre-booked parties.

The Museum is registered with the MLA (Museums, Libraries and Archives). It is also a member of several Museum organizations, including the Leicestershire and Rutland Museums Forum.

ACCESS

The Trust continues to improve its facilities for those who have mobility problems.  The museum is level throughout, and advice is taken on all new displays.  However the Lock side has steep slopes, Wheelchair users will need strong assistance.

Please be aware that the locks contain deep water and most of them are unfenced Extra care is needed with children and pets.  If in doubt please call us on 0116  2792 657. having given the warning this is a safe site if treated with respect.
